Zanjan rugs are made in Zanjan, which is located in northwestern Iran near Tehran and literally means "dear wife" or "dear woman" in Farsi. Nomadic tribes hand weave the magnificent tribal area rugs in Zanjan. Despite the fact that Zanjan has a strong Turkish influence, the locals are all Kurdish. The nomadic weavers live a peaceful and harmonious life with nature in a part of the world untouched by modern conveniences and technology. Both men and women participate in the art of weaving tribal area rugs for personal and commercial use. Weaving is frequently the family's sole source of income.
